63.7% of Malaysians suffer from headaches or migraines. Many use these 2 terms interchangeably although they are not the same. While headache means pain in the head, migraine is pain on only one side of the head, be it left or right.

According to the Migraine Research Foundation, women are 3 times more likely to get migraines than men. While 60% of tension headache subjects graded their headaches as mild, more than 60% of migraine subjects graded their headaches as severe. This could post a huge problem as it definitely affects the quality of life for migraine subjects.

Due to the severity of the migraine that the patients are experiencing, many of them are commonly referred to as specialists (especially neurologists). They then undergo an extensive investigation of the head/brain, including an MRI of the brain to rule out abnormal growth to rule out cancer. When the investigation results show no significant abnormalities, patients are then usually sent home with medications such as painkillers to manage their symptoms (the headaches). Unfortunately, they continue to suffer from migraine attacks, whenever their stress levels are high.

Since the root cause of migraine is most likely stress, we at SweetLife focuses on managing stress instead. INSOMNIA      失眠症

According to the National Centre for Biotechnology Information, 33.8% of Malaysians suffer from Insomnia. This is basically 1 in every 3 Malaysians!

Suffering from Insomnia is just like having a smartphone that cannot be fully charged. Frustrating? You bet! Ask those who suffer from insomnia & they will share with you their agony, how they struggle to keep up to the challenges of life when they are not able to have a sound sleep.

Some people have difficulty falling asleep, in which they will take at least 30 minutes to an hour before they really shut down (fall asleep). While some others are ‘light sleepers’, in which they have difficulty in maintaining a sound sleep, and they tend to wake up frequently during the night. Lastly, there are those who suffer from early morning awakenings, where they wake up earlier than they should, usually starting at 3 am. After waking up, they remain awake as they can’t go back to sleep anymore. Irrespective of the types of Insomnia, the end result is invariably the same, they feel groggy & are not able to perform their best in their daily work.

By stimulating the release of Melatonin (Sleep Hormone), our patients experience better sleep, both in quantity & quality. We have had a patient who is able to increase his sleep from 4 to 8 hours per night, within a month of our treatment. We have also helped our patients to ‘wean off’ their sleeping pills, and they are able to sleep better too.

Many patients with insomnia turn to sleeping pills or medications that are of ‘Off-label use’, which many a time, is only a symptomatic treatment. Worse still, many patients develop tolerance towards the medications & higher dosage is required with time.

ANXIETY / DEPRESSION      焦虑/抑郁

 

According to The Star newspaper (2/4/2017), 40% of Malaysians will suffer from mental health issues in their lifetime. Overwhelming stress has resulted in many of us suffering from anxiety & depression. To make matters worse, many are suffering in silence, due to the stigma attached to these psychiatric illnesses. Not knowing where to turn to, some of these patients, especially those who suffer from severe depression, decide to take the short cut by taking their own lives.

In anxiety disorders, some people suffer from panic attacks, when they encounter stressful events that are beyond their control. Common symptoms include chest pain, palpitations & shortness of breath, which are identical to a heart attack. Therefore, these patients are regularly subjected to investigations of the heart, ECG (Electrocardiogram) being the commonest (and least invasive too). The problem is, whenever panic attacks occur, these patients will end up in GP clinics or emergency department of hospitals, and ECG results are usually normal with no significant abnormalities. This is also called ‘Doctor Shopping’.

By stimulating the release of Serotonin (calm hormone), our medical device calms down patients with anxiety & reduces the frequency of panic attacks.

On the other hand, the release of Serotonin (happy hormone) helps alleviate the symptoms of Depressive patients. While anxiety & depression are never easy illnesses to be treated, we are glad to know that our medical device is able to help up to 95% of the patients.
